38. embrace the men's department

after hearing from a friend that my darling róisín was featured in the now month old january issue of elle uk giving out some of her very own personal style tips, i immediately planned my whole weekend around a visit to the bookstore for a chai & the hopes that they might
still have a copy left.

of course, i took the opportunity to test out one of the many menswear inspired looks that have been mulling about in my head as of late, only to read that one of róisín's tips was just about that - incorporating menswear looks into your everyday wardrobe for a
"really avant-garde daywear look".

i do love how róisín & i are seemingly always on the same page...

black boyfriend blazer, aa winter leggings, prada inspired nude lace blouse, crown vintage heeled oxfords, bowler hat found in the drama closet at school, handmade bow ring, mum's vintage watch & beyond retro tote from stevie.

for the rest of róisín's tips click.

"and now the other girls are doing it and i'll have to move on. do you know what i mean?"

before i go off & finally post the outfit post ive been chatting about now for ages, let's see first what the uber sexy, chic & very funny rosheen murphy was caught wearing out in bryant park on tuesday, either just before or just after the diesel show.

funny that its the same exact spot where i spent my first moments ever in bryant park; sat at one of those green garden tables, debating whether or not to ask the raven haired - cut like lanphear's - model next to me if i could, just if only for the cool factor, bum a fag. i didn't.

maybe next time róisín will be there for the chance.

looking more dapper than the boys.

after spotting nearly every blogger, me included, in this online blogging world sporting the now phenomenon alexander wang look filled with holes, rips, tears, chains, sheer, see-thru, leather, body conscious masses of monochrome fabrics, i began to take a look at my own wardrobe & wonder what we wore before wang.

i found myself wanting a new way of thinking, a new trend, a new way of dressing. & after posting a very grunge, very wang styled editorial, discovered that i wasnt the only blogger out there who craved such things.

it began with the trouser; still slightly skinny & highwaisted but with more movement. paired with a classic buttoned up blouse, a tailored blazer, maybe a menswear inspired hat, waistcoat or tie & close-toed flat shoes such as brogues & oxfords.

i started looking to old muses for inspiration such as annie hall, marianne faithfull & lauren hutton all epitomizing menswear chic in the 70s. i also took a look through the groundbreaking ysl le smoking collections of the era. & as always, searching through folders of images of my goto muse róisín murphy, gave much inspiration as she too has often donned an immaculate menswear look.

alas, im not creating anything new here. as fashion is always going back to itself & its old trends making them fresh & new again years later. but, as for now, im taking down the plastered up images of erin wasson in her doc martens & replacing them with this homemade inspiration board filled with many lovely photos of róisín in her always spot on men ensembles, screencaps from my favourite scenes in annie hall & of róisín during her moloko days in the familiar feeling video looking even more dapper than the boys, a sartorialist snap of a very well dressed swedish lad, a look from the jenni kayne fall 09 collection & another gorgeous black & white image ive had saved for ages.

needless to say, this new way of thinking has all but taken over the entire idea behind my next outfit post & with fall fashion weeks upon us heres hoping we're not the only ones dreaming of recreating the past. perhaps thats why i am so excited this year.

ro at wang.

i cannot believe this.

advanced apologies for obsessive 'róisín murphy out & about during fw 09 fashion weeks' photo posts that are sure to arise later on in the following weeks...

is everyone as excited as i am this year?
i cant wait to spot some (much needed) new trends.
oh & more róisín too.
of course.

don't you get off on it.

a little sneak peek of an outfit post to come soon.

tag from the lovely L from tjejsajten;

Describe your personal style: modern vintage.

What are the staples in your wardrobe? black tights, pashminas, a boyfriend blazer, slouchy sheer tees, cheap mondays, bandage skirts, floral dresses, oversized cardigans, tight leggings, vintage boots,
black lace bras.

What's your signature look? messy hair, american apparel basics in monochrome colours, a huge pashmina scarf wrapped multiple times around my neck, topped off with vintage jewellry & accessories; usually bags, sunnies, shoes.

What inspires you? the fashionable people on city sidewalks & whatever song my ipod shuffles to next.

Who is your fashion muse? "going out & getting dressed up at the weekend is fabulous! with a gareth pugh dress or a mad knitted outfit, you're suddenly beyond the narrow constrains of your normal everyday life." - róisín murphy.

Favorite purchase of all time? my 1970s vintage ysl heels.

Biggest splurge? weekends in nyc are always a big splurge.

Beauty routine? sunblock, ysl touche éclat, nars blusher, face stockholm lipstick in matte rod,
heavy mascara & never brushing my hair.

What jewelry do you never take off? i always take off my jewellry. but everyday i rotate through my gigantic collection of rings. mostly vintage, flea market found & given to me by mates.

What are you wishing for? a record player, leather soled brogues for the dancefloor
& a monthly rent in les nyc.

What are your obsessions? overpriced fashion magazines, street divas & cups of tea.

i tag my darling lizzy.

love, A.

what if my shoes don't match my jacket?

the getups & gowns at this years elle style awards were highly disappointing. & the only two girls who got my approval are the ones who, not surprisingly, are always getting my approval. even their clutches were spot on.

alexa went classic & wore a custom fitted chanel dress while róisín went trendy wearing a givenchy top & harlem pants.

i just bought myself a pair of harlem-esque pants last weekend actually, before even knowing róisín would be in attendance at the awards, much less show up in pants like mine.

coincidence? expect outfit posts soon.

absolute favourite photo of the night.

the morning sky captured in a rearview mirror, a vegetarian lunch, my beyond retro tote, the cluttered dressing room at aa, the sidewalk, my oxford clad feet & a shopping bag, listening to róisín in the sunshine, browsing the teacups & glasses for the nyc apt at anthropologie, skull candles at uo & a copy of paper in my lap.

saturdays = youth.

http://www.permanentvacation.se

i'm spending today locked indoors with the radiator turn on high & the shutters open to bask my room in as much warmth & sunlight as possible. i'll don my own striped frock, floral knickers, bare legs & wooly socks to stay extra warm while revarnishing my nails a bright coral & lounging atop fluffy white sheets reading through the three expensive foreign glossies i got my hands on yesterday.

what will you do?

happy saturday.

five am, out again.

never a huge fan of erin's california style, i was shocked to find myself actually admiring what she was wearing for once. so, i felt i just had to repost this look as ive completely fallen in love with it & its surprisingly minimalistic swedish feel.

the shades of black, the messy bun & sheer top peeking out under a draped knotted tee is absolute perfection.

surround sound, you can't turn it down.

alexandre vauthier s/s 09

róisín's first runway show as a contracted storm model.

"It's not so much about the modelling, but the fashion,' she said. ‘I decided that although I have always loved fashion and been immersed in it for twenty years, I felt now was the time to actually take it seriously, you know have my own voice in the industry and be represented. I would love to do a campaign and who knows maybe even do some designing? I wouldn't rule it out."

it was also vauthier's first solo collection after previous work as chief designer of
jean paul gaultier's couture department.

my favourites; the sequined blazer, sheer (yet still shoulder padded) blouse,
& of course that amazing gold flecked dress.

not a bad start, i'd say. for the both of them.
